Across the northern hemisphere, anxious plant enthusiasts are seeing the leaves of their beloved indoor jungles turn yellow and sag just as the heating reaches full blast and daylight fades. Many reach straight for the watering can or fertiliser, yet an age-old woodland technique suggests that something much simpler – and considerably cheaper – may help plants survive, and even fare better, in the coldest part of the year.
Winter, radiators and the gradual suffocation of houseplant roots
People commonly blame winter houseplant problems on low temperatures. In centrally heated homes, however, the more subtle danger is the combination of extremely dry air and saturated compost. Radiators strip moisture from both leaves and the surrounding air, while compost at the base of a pot can remain wet for days.
Throughout winter, many familiar houseplants slow their growth. Their water demand falls, sap circulates less quickly and roots absorb only a fraction of the water they would take up in spring and summer. Even so, the soil surface may appear dusty and parched, particularly when the pot is close to a hot radiator.
The owner then waters again, and this is where the trouble starts. Water collects at the bottom of the pot, displacing oxygen and leaving the roots in a badly ventilated bog. Fungi thrive, roots begin to rot and the plant can fail from the bottom upwards.

Set a clean, dry pine cone on the compost of a houseplant pot and it forms a buffer between the soil and the air. It is not a sponge placed within the potting mix. Instead, it gently influences the thin but important surface layer, where surplus moisture, mould and algae commonly develop.

This simple, low-tech aid works well for many popular foliage houseplants. Monsteras, ficus, pothos, peace lilies, dracaenas and parlour palms all occupy the awkward middle ground of liking moisture while disliking waterlogged roots.
For cacti and succulents, which need their compost to dry more completely, a cone is less essential as an indicator. It can nevertheless reveal shifts in room humidity. If a cone remains firmly closed for several days close to a radiator, condensation or inadequate ventilation may be causing conditions that encourage rot.
Do not use cones for plants needing consistently high humidity at the compost surface, including certain carnivorous species kept in water trays. Their requirements are specialised, and a drier surface “buffer” may be unsuitable.
